Sandra Jenocovich has a beautiful new yard 70 years in the making.

Jenocovich is one of hundreds of property owners in Clarkdale, Ariz., whose yards are being refurbished at company expense to remedy soil contamination caused by historic smelter activity. Most of the impact was done nearly a century ago by a company that has been out of business for decades. 

Trucks were getting stuck in traffic jams on the road to the crushers at Cerro Verde, so an enterprising team of employees created a high-tech traffic cop of sorts to clear the bottleneck.

On-site engineers on a Cerro Verde agile team in Peru developed a feature in the existing dispatch system that uses real-time data from all of the 140 or so haul trucks hauling material at the site to determine which of the lanes leading to the primary crushers will allow them to dump their loads then be on their way the quickest.

María Eugenia Morales’ contributions to El Abra and her efforts to support the careers of her female colleagues have been recognized with the mining industry’s highest honor.

Morales, a Civil Industry Engineer at El Abra, recently received Chile’s Outstanding Woman in Mining 2021 award. This distinction honors the recipient’s experience and track record in her position on site, and it highlights the active role she has played in advancing female talent in positions historically filled by men.
