New External Sender Tags

Starting next week, you will see new external sender labels—including both tags and banners—in your Microsoft Outlook inbox. These labels will replace the current banners that appear when you receive an email from someone outside of the company.

What you need to know:

  • These labels are automatically applied to emails that come from outside of Freeport, giving you an extra heads-up to check if the email is legitimate before you open any links or attachments. When you see this label, take an extra second to review the email.
  • With this change, you’ll now see the “External” tag in the subject line of the email, with the banner appearing in the message body. This makes it easier to see if an email is coming from an external source, especially in the mobile version of Outlook.
  • In the banner, you have the option to select Block sender, which will send that email and future emails from that sender to your Junk folder in Outlook.
  • Unless you select “Block sender,” this rollout does not have any impact on which emails you receive.

These new banners are the first in a series of new Microsoft Defender security features coming to your inbox. We’ll be bringing you more information about these new features and tools in the coming months.

For more details on these external sender banners, please see our printable end-user guidance. This guidance is also available in both Espanol and Bahasa.
