Henderson’s dismantling and removal of an old mine shaft surface structure recently was recognized among a number of outstanding achievements in reclamation work in Colorado.
This effort was recognized at the National Western Mining Conference – an annual event hosted by the Colorado Mining Association to recognize companies and individuals who have made outstanding and impactful contributions to environmental restoration in the mining industry.
Henderson operations embarked on a complex project in 2024 to remove three, 5,000-pound steel rings at a high-altitude, remote location. This process involved dismantling and airlifting the massive steel structures, utilizing a helicopter to transport the material over steep terrain. The upper 20 feet of the 1,600-foot-deep shaft was filled with a foam to eliminate potential risk to the public. Freeport’s award came in the category of Overcoming Unique Challenges.
“This recognition is a tribute to the commitment and teamwork among a number of diverse teams,” said Kasey Martin, Senior Environmental Engineer. “While this award from the Colorado Mining Association is meaningful to everyone who worked on the project, we are most proud of having completed the work safely.”
The awards, presented by the Colorado Mining Association, recognized three categories: Overcoming Unique Challenges, Advanced Technology in Reclamation and Developed or Continued Substantial Community Partnerships.
