With the recent integration of Microsoft Defender for Office 365, Freeport has a new system protecting company email inboxes from potential threats.
"Enhancing our email security is pivotal in safeguarding our digital assets,” said Jeff Pick, Director-Security Operations and Architecture. “The deployment of Microsoft Defender is key in preemptively addressing email threats."
Microsoft Defender replaces the prior Proofpoint email security system, both enhancing our security tools and streamlining the user experience in Outlook.
The security features in Outlook have been updated and relocated. Notable changes include:
- Reporting emails: The new "Report" button on the Outlook ribbon – marked by a red shield icon – allows users to report phishing or junk emails with ease.
- Navigating the junk folder: The "Junk Email" folder now consolidates junk emails, which include mass-distributed communications like marketing emails and newsletters. Users can address misjudged emails by selecting "Not Junk," returning them to the inbox and adding that sender to the safe sender list.
- Checking quarantine: Emails deemed highly suspicious by Defender are quarantined. Users can review these at security.microsoft.com/quarantine and receive a weekly digest of quarantined messages. Users have the option to “release” mistakenly quarantined emails to the inbox.
The integration began with small-scale tests before expanding to larger pilot phases involving thousands of users. Alongside this rollout, the Defender team also launched new features such as “external sender” banners and tags.
“The Defender team was well prepared for this transition,” Pick said. "Given the volume of emails sent and received for a company our size, it was crucial that we did this right."
