Today, we celebrate National Miners Day – observed annually in the United States on December 6 – a moment to honor the miners who have shaped our nation’s progress with their strength, dedication and sacrifice.
Miners at Freeport – and across the nation – play a critical role in powering the modern world and driving the economy.
“Every miner carries the legacy of resiliency that drives the industry forward,” said Josh Olmsted, President and Chief Operating Officer-Americas. “At Freeport, we are focused not just on producing important metals but doing so safely and in a way that builds a stronger foundation for all of us.”
On December 6, 1907, a tragic accident in West Virginia claimed the lives of at least 362 miners. More than a century later, Congress officially proclaimed that date as a day of remembrance and celebration for miners across the United States in 2009.
“National Miners Day is a reminder to always work with safety top of mind, so we can honor the past, safeguard the present and ensure a better future,” Olmsted said.
