El Abra Enlists Life-size Cutouts to Help Protect Native Wildlife

By svc-ewscms, 16 May, 2025

Life-sized signs depicting local wildlife are popping up around the El Abra operation as part of an effort to raise awareness and prevent the real animals from getting hit by cars and trucks.

Cutouts of llamas, foxes, vizcachas, chinchillas and other native species, many of which are protected or endangered, have been placed next to roads inside the mining operation to alert drivers to the presence of the real thing.

The idea came from El Abra environmental workers who wanted to raise awareness of the wildlife that inhabits the site so drivers will be more watchful. It was recognized with an internal prize for innovation.

Since the signs were installed, drivers in the mine have been paying closer attention and are on the lookout for the local species, according to the professionals monitoring the initiative. The goal is to finish the year without any motor vehicle accidents involving wildlife.
