“Together for Our Reserve”About 70 workers from Freeport-McMoRan’s Cerro Verde operation recently volunteered to clean trash from the roads in the Salinas and Aguada Blanca National Reserve near the mine site in Peru.

More than 150 bags of garbage were collected by the volunteers along the roads that run from Arequipa to other cities and towns in the region. The trash mostly was a mix of glass, plastic bottles and non-reusable garbage tossed by motorists and bus riders. The theme of this year’s campaign was "Together for Our Reserve."

The Cerro Verde volunteers were split into three groups that picked up garbage at different parts of the national reserve. Two groups focused on trash collection while the third spoke with people in about 300 vehicles headed to Arequipa to raise awareness about environmental issues impacting the area. They also warned drivers to be careful because the area is habitat for vicuñas, which along with guanacos are unique llama-like creatures native to Peru.

In the photos above (clockwise from top): Cerro Verde volunteers provided drivers with information about the region’s environment and urged caution in the area that is native to the vicuñas.
