National Miners Day Celebrates U.S. Miners

Today is National Miners Day, a time to reflect on and recognize the contributions made by the Freeport team and other miners to power the U.S. economy.

“Mining demands a lot, and our employees consistently deliver to help ensure our company’s continued success,” said Josh Olmsted, President and Chief Operating Officer-Americas. “The entire leadership team is grateful for the commitment and dedication our workforce exhibits each day.”

Because National Miners Day was established with worker safety top of mind, today also is an opportunity to remind everyone of the responsibility we all share to put safety first.

“With everyone’s commitment to safe production day in and day out, I am confident we can finish the year on a strong note and carry that momentum into 2024,” Olmsted said.

National Miners Day was created by Congress in 2009 to honor the “accomplishments and sacrifices of the miners of the nation.”

Though it has been official only since 2009, National Miners Day has been recognized for more than 100 years. The Mine Safety and Health Administration chose December 6 to honor the profession and commemorate the loss on that date in 1907 of 362 miners who died in an explosion in two adjoining West Virginia coal mines, the worst mining disaster in American history.
