Hispanic Heritage Month is an opportunity to celebrate the histories, cultures and contributions of American citizens whose ancestors came from Mexico, Spain, the Caribbean and Central and South America.
For Danny Benavidez, it’s also a chance to reflect on his family’s rich history with the company.
“Hispanic Heritage Month is important,” said Benavidez, a Superintendent at Chino. “It’s a time to look back and reflect. I think of my family alone and the sacrifices they made to get here – just to get to jobs – and the role they played and the ground they laid for us.”
Benavidez shared his family’s story in a video produced by the company to commemorate Hispanic Heritage Month. From his great-great-grandfather to a nephew and numerous family members in between, Benavidez is one of six generations who have built their careers at the company.
“I do consider Freeport part of my family heritage,” Benavidez said. “It’s a great place to work.”
Hispanic Heritage Month is celebrated each year from September 15 to October 15. The observation started in 1968 as Hispanic Heritage Week under President Lyndon Johnson and was expanded by President Ronald Reagan in 1988 to cover a 30-day period.
