Origins of National Intern Day
In 2017, WayUp, a U.S.-based job site and mobile app for college students and recent graduates, dedicated the last Thursday of July to celebrate interns, the future leaders of the world. Nominees for the Top 100 list are determined based on diversity and inclusion initiatives, compensation and perks, program orientation and structure, as well as career development, full-time employment prospects and company culture.
Be sure to cast your vote by July 20, as 30 percent of a company’s rating for the final list is determined by voting results. The other 70 percent is made up of results from a panel of industry experts judging information submitted for the nominations.
Freeport’s intern program
Freeport offers a robust internship program across its sites in North America geared to equip participants with the practical experience, skills and knowledge for a bright future in mining or a related industry. These are temporary, full-time paid positions typically running from May through August.
Company interns work alongside Freeport’s talented professionals on meaningful, relevant projects, many of which will be showcased at the 2023 Summer Intern Conference, scheduled for July 26-27 at the Phoenix Collaboration Hub.
As the labor market remains demanding, the importance of the company’s internship program continues to be significant, serving multiple purposes. It plays a pivotal role in attracting talent, cultivating potential employees, creating a talent pipeline, and making an immediate impact on the business. Freeport’s internship program represents a strategic investment in talent acquisition and development that aligns with the long-term goals and needs of the company, said Betsy Johnson, Manager-Recruiting.
Since 2014, the company has extended offers to 80 percent of interns on average, with a 70 percent acceptance rate.
