As we approach 2023, we do so knowing 2022 saw an alarming increase in safety incidents across the operations. Too many of our Freeport family were injured or exposed to a high risk which resulted in the worst performance in North America in nearly a decade.

Over the past several months, we’ve taken a hard look at why this is happening. We analyzed data to identify trends and found that inexperience is a key factor. One in four employees is either new to Freeport or new to a supervisory role.

To focus on the most important things, we paused various initiatives to eliminate distraction. We’re making more time for site leaders to be in the field, hold conversations to better understand employee needs and reinforce safe work behaviors. We’re also working to help ensure sites are sufficiently staffed and frontline employees receive the support and training they need.

Each operation is leading local efforts to bring a focus on safety fundamentals. Our corporate Health and Safety team continues to analyze data to provide insights sites can use to focus resources where they will have the most impact. In addition, best practices are being shared across our organization.

For a closer look at safety and 2023 objectives, I encourage you to read the just released issue of The Miner magazine, which dives into the types of incidents we’re experiencing, some commonalities and the initial positive steps we are taking to move forward.

Remember – nothing is more important than safety. It’s critical we look out for one another. This is particularly true during the holidays when stress levels and distractions rise. One concerning insight is 37 percent of our safety incidents are occurring on the last day of a schedule. Please keep this in mind and stay focused while on the job, as well as look out for others who may have a lot on their mind.

You help make a positive impact when you identify risks, focus on doing your job safely and well, support your coworkers and stop the job if something isn’t right.

In the coming months, you’ll be seeing and hearing more about safety with our goal of helping ensure everyone goes home safely each day. We also want to hear your ideas for safe production, so be sure to share them with your supervisor or other leaders.

Thank you for all you do. Despite our recent challenges, I know we have what it takes to reverse the trend, and I look forward to a safer 2023.

Have a safe and happy holiday season.
