(December 8, 2022) The 2022 holiday season is here, along with the worst flu season in more than a decade combined with an uptick in COVID-19 and respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) cases.
This triple health threat is overwhelming hospitals and impacting employees at some company sites. Practicing smart health habits and taking precautions is key to making the holidays safe and bright for all.
“Even though we are not required to wear a mask, it’s important to take appropriate health precautions for yourself, your family, your co-workers and your community,” said Dr. Richard Vinroot, Vice President and Medical Director. “We have seen a number of flu and COVID-19 cases at Tyrone, Chino, Bagdad and Morenci, and we expect an already bad season to get worse due to the prevalence of three viruses.”
More than two years of pandemic measures have kept flu and RSV at bay, said Vinroot, who recently got his combination flu shot / COVID-19 booster shot with a group of employees in Chino.
While communities may be “back to normal,” he added, it’s important to avoid exposing others, particularly those who are the most vulnerable, infants and young children, the elderly, and the immunocompromised. The highest death rates for flu and COVID-19 are among those 65 and older.
“You may recover well, but you may expose someone’s grandparents or baby,” Vinroot said. “You simply don’t know who people live with or interact with, so first and foremost, don’t come to work sick.”
In addition to staying home if you get sick, here are other steps to protect others:
- Get a booster shot for COVID-19.
- Get a flu shot.
- Wash your hands, or use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer, frequently.
- Cover your cough.
- Wear a mask as an added layer of protection to protect vulnerable family members.
- Talk to your doctor about antivirals if you get sick.
Consider other options, such as virtual visits or urgent care, if you are sick, as emergency rooms have long waits.
