Count Yourself a Miner on National Miners Day

(December 6, 2022) Today is National Miners Day, established by Congress in remembrance and respect of the contributions and sacrifices made by our country’s miners, and that means you.

Whether it’s in a pit, a mill, a warehouse, or your home office, your work at Freeport-McMoRan helps provide essential metals that wire the world and allow a modern standard of living for people in the U.S. and across the globe.

“National Miners Day is a reminder for us to acknowledge the important contributions our employees make every day to the mining industry in the United States as a whole, as well as the company’s success,” said Josh Olmsted, President and Chief Operating Officer-Americas. “Your efforts are truly appreciated at every level of the organization.

“Because the origins of National Miners Day are rooted in safety, today is another opportunity to remind everyone of the shared responsibility we all have in making safety our No. 1 priority. Let’s do all we can to finish the year strong.”

National Miners Day was created to recognize the more than 380,000 mine employees who extract almost 100 different types of minerals and work in every U.S. state.

While it was made official in 2009, miners have observed it for more than a century. In 1907, the Mine Safety and Health Administration chose December 6 as National Miners Day to commemorate the loss of 362 people in an explosion at two adjoining Monongah, W.Va. coal mines.
