During the past two months, we all have closely followed the Russia-Ukraine conflict and unfolding humanitarian crisis. Today, the United Nations estimates more than 5.2 million people have fled Ukraine and more than 6.5 million are displaced within the country itself.
To assist with humanitarian relief efforts, Freeport has donated $1 million to be split evenly between Save the Children and the UN Refugee Agency. In addition, I personally will match dollar-for-dollar employee donations to the vetted organizations listed below that are supporting Ukraine relief efforts, up to $100,000.
Through these donations and the Freeport-McMoRan Foundation’s generous Matching Gifts program, we can make an even greater impact by coming together as One Freeport to help the millions affected by this heartbreaking situation.
As a reminder, the foundation will double match employee donations of $25 or more up to the first $1,000 contributed and single match any amount more than $1,000. Go to Freeport In My Community for program details and to complete the online form.
There are many agencies involved in Ukraine relief efforts. Following is a list of leading, vetted organizations and a description of their work. You may donate to any organization providing relief aid in the Ukraine, but we encourage you to be cautious of scams and those fraudulently posing as legitimate relief organizations.
- Save the Children – Save the Children’s Ukraine Crisis Relief Fund is supporting children and families with immediate aid, such as food, water, hygiene kits, psychosocial support and cash assistance. Save the Children has been operating in Ukraine since 2014, delivering essential humanitarian aid to children and their families. To donate, visit Save the Children/Donate.
- UNHCR – The UN Refugee Agency – UNHCR has a long-standing presence in Ukraine, as well as the neighboring countries of Poland, Hungary, Moldova, Slovakia and Romania. Their teams are coordinating the refugee response in partnership with other UN agencies and NGO partners. This includes expanding operations to provide basic needs, including access to mental health and psychosocial support, food, unrestricted cash assistance and core relief items, as well as education and health services. To donate, visit USA for UNHCR.
- UNICEF – UNICEF is working with partners to provide vital humanitarian supplies and to reach vulnerable children and families with essential services, including health, education, protection, water and sanitation. To donate, visit UNICEF/Donate.
- International Rescue Committee – The International Rescue Committee (IRC) is scaling up support to government and NGO partners to help provide the basic needs of people seeking refuge from the conflict. Working together with partners, the IRC is establishing a response that will provide essential support to civilians through the launch of an emergency appeal to help displaced families with critical aid. To donate, visit IRC/Donate.
- International Medical Corps – The International Medical Corps (IMC) is providing urgently needed emergency and mental health care services from medical professionals, including specialist physicians, general practitioners, and nurses. IMC is providing gender-based violence response services to increase the protection of women and children facing risks in wake of the conflict – and providing preventive care to keep displaced communities safe from COVID-19. To donate, visit IMC/Donate.
- International Committee of the Red Cross – As fighting in Ukraine continues, the Red Cross is providing lifesaving aid to those in need both in the country and in neighboring areas. Teams are distributing food, water, clothing, bedding, hygiene sets, blankets and SIM cards so that families can stay connected amid the turmoil. They are also supplying baby products and services for children, preparing tents and other shelters for refugees and providing psychosocial support for those who are physically, mentally and emotionally stressed. To donate, visit ICRC/Donate.
On behalf of our leadership team, we are pleased to be able to provide this opportunity that allows you to make an even bigger impact with your donations.
