(March 10, 2022) Freeport employees and their dependents can earn a graduate or undergraduate degree at Western New Mexico University at a reduced cost thanks to a new partnership between the company and school.
Starting summer 2022, all North American employees can take in-person, hybrid or online classes and pay in-state tuition – with an additional 30 percent discount. The goal of the partnership is to bolster Freeport’s existing training and education assistance programs. Dependents – even those who reside outside of New Mexico – are eligible for the in-state tuition rates.
“A college education is a significant investment for anyone,” said Todd Graver, Vice President-Human Resources Operations at Freeport-McMoRan. “Our partnership with Western New Mexico University will help make college more affordable for our employees and their dependents.”
Course catalogs are available now, and summer and fall registration opens on March 21. Get more information and start your university application on the Freeport informational page from WNMU.
“Providing opportunities that allow Freeport employees and their dependents to better their lives and the lives of their families is made possible through this meaningful partnership,” said Western New Mexico University President Joseph Shepard. “Working with our longtime community partner, we are ensuring education and advanced training are never out of reach because of financial or geographical barriers.”
Education Assistance
Employees with approved programs of study through the company’s Education Assistance program can be reimbursed up to $5,250 annually for tuition, fees and textbooks. Read the requirements to qualify for Education Assistance, which includes an application that must be fully approved in writing no later than two weeks before classes start. Please note that not all degree programs will fit the requirements for reimbursement, so read the policy carefully.
Career Advancement
At New Mexico operations, several employees credit WNMU for helping them move forward in their careers, including Danny Benavidez, Superintendent-Tyrone.
“I enrolled at Western New Mexico University, wanting to do better and increase my earning potential for my family,” he said. “The professors supported me in completing my degree, which allowed me to pursue higher level jobs and leadership roles within the company.”
