With 2022 underway, we want to express our appreciation for the PTFI team’s exceptional work in successfully executing the transition from surface mining to the largest underground block caving operation in the world. Over many years, our team has managed the complexities and challenges of this major investment program while keeping a focus on developing our people, who are well known throughout the global mining industry for their expertise and skills in managing and operating complex projects.
To recognize several individuals for their roles of increasing responsibility in the organization, we are announcing the following changes in PTFI’s operational management:
George Banini, Executive Vice President-Operations, will be assuming an expanded operational leadership role at PTFI, reflecting his advancement in recent years to all aspects of the operation. George has 17 years of experience in the PTFI organization and over 25 years of experience in the global mining industry. He will report to Mark Johnson, Chief Operating Officer-Indonesia, who will continue as Chair of the PTFI Operating Committee, and Tony Wenas, President Director-PTFI.
Mark will be relocating to the U.S. during 2022 and will continue to be actively engaged in PTFI’s long-range planning for future development opportunities and in providing oversight, advice and counsel to support PTFI’s technical leaders. Mark has played a critical role for 30 years in planning PTFI’s long-term development and relocated from the U.S. to Papua in 2018 to oversee the transition to underground.
Carl Tauran, Executive Vice President-Site Operations, and his team will support George on operational, safety and environmental matters. Carl has 28 years of experience in the PTFI organization and was designated as the Technical Mine Manager, subject to approval from the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources. Also supporting George will be Clementino Lamury, Executive Vice President-Human Resources, Brian Esser, Executive Vice President-Information and Business Services, and Arief Nasuha, Vice Present-Security Risk Management.

In addition, we are making the following organizational changes to support future plans for the operation of the Manyar smelter, currently under construction in East Java:
H-D Garz, Executive Vice President-Corporate Planning and Business Strategy, is supporting the smelter development team and is leading our operational readiness planning to prepare for operations in 2024. In this capacity, H-D will continue to work closely with Tony Wenas and our team in Papua to coordinate future logistics and development of the organization to operate the new smelter. He will report administratively to Rob Schroeder, Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer-PTFI.
