(December 6, 2021) Today is the day to tip your hat to miners past and present for their hard work, contributions and sacrifices and to pat yourself on the back if you happen to be one.
And you don’t have to wear a hard hat and drive a haul truck to be a miner, because miners wear a lot of different hats. At Freeport-McMoRan, from the pit to the mill to the warehouse to the office, we’re all miners wearing the same FCX badge.
Throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, mines across the country have kept operating as an essential industry, producing the minerals that helped keep other industries and the nation’s economy going. The nation’s miners are responsible for the materials that generate nearly a fifth of the gross domestic product of the U.S.
The U.S. Senate enacted National Miners Day in 2009. However, the Mine Safety and Health Administration has recognized it on December 6 each year since 1907.
