Workplace Exams take time, but they are an important part of keeping yourself and your coworkers safe.
“Workplace exams are not in addition to the work, they are part of the work,” said Technical Instructor Scott Williams.
Williams stresses that people should take the time to do a quality workplace exam so that you or someone you work with doesn’t get hurt. Don’t just walk from Point A to Point B and check boxes. He says to look up and around, to check every piece of equipment on every floor you are working on, and to ask your supervisor or coworkers if you run into anything you have questions about.
“Remember elimination is at the top of your hierarchy of control,” he said. “If you notice something in the field that you can’t take care of immediately, make sure to mark it with flagging and tagging and notify the right people to correct the issue.”
There is an opportunity to ensure Workplace Exams are legible and include notating correction of adverse conditions.
“Submitting a digital form solves the legibility issue,” said Health and Safety Manager Cara Forbregd. “Also, please don’t forget to check some commonly missed items which include fire extinguishers, eye wash stations, general housekeeping, chemical labelling and guarding.”
