Microsoft Defender will now monitor, not block, medium-risk websites

By svc-ewscms, 16 May, 2025

As we announced last year, Microsoft Defender protects Freeport from risky websites, software and web apps. Using dozens of metrics, Defender evaluates whether a website poses a potential cybersecurity risk, blocking access to sites that may contain malware, poor security and other issues.

Originally, we set Defender to block both high-risk and medium-risk websites. However, after evaluating your feedback, we have changed these settings so that Defender no longer blocks all access to medium-risk sites.

Instead, medium-risk sites are now “Monitored” instead of “Blocked.” When you navigate to a medium-risk site, you will still see the Microsoft Defender landing page, but you will now have the option to select Allow and continue to the site.

  • If you believe the website that you are trying to access has legitimate business use and you would like MIS to reevaluate it, please submit an Access to Blocked Website request in ServiceNow.
  • If a web app that you are using is being either blocked or monitored by Defender, we recommend you consider alternative options on the Approved Software list in ServiceNow.

For more information on Microsoft Defender and blocked / monitored sites, please view our guide. If you have any questions about Defender or this change, please contact the MIS Help Desk.
